Abstract

This research intended to analyze and identify the vulnerability and the contamination risk of the aquifers in Venâncio Aires’s region. To do so, hydrogeological and geological databases, contamination sources info, satellite imagery, and fieldword data were used. The aquifers’s vulnerability and contaminarion risk were evaluated using GOD and POSH methodologies, respectively. 271 wells were identified. Data analysis revealed the existance of the Guarani aquifer system (SAG), and the Serra Geral aquifer system (SASG). In the SAG, low and medium vulnerabilities classes predominated, with 44,27% and 38,16% of it’s area, respectively. In the SASG, the medium vulnerability class predominated, with 85,79% of it’s area in this class. Regarding the diffuse contamination sources, 41,4% of the county’s area was classified as moderate potential, and 2,6% was classified as reduced potential. 73 punctual contamination sources were mapped, of which 23 were classified as reduced potential, 30 as moderate potential, and 20 as elevated potential. In the SASG, the contamination danger of the diffuses sources had the predominance of the moderate class, with 35,7% of it’s area within this class. Regarding SAG, the contamination danger was low and moderate, with 19,5% and 15,2% of it’s area within these classes, respectively. The results showed that the aquifer systems have medium to high vulnerability areas, and moderate risk, so, it becomes necessary the management of the groundwater quality.
