Abstract

This study aims to map the natural and anthropogenic vulnerability to contamination of the Barreiras Aquifer System (SAB) in the Pirangi River Basin by applying GOD, DRASTIC and IS methods. From the analysis and interpretation of 38 lithological profiles of wells distributed in the study area and cartographic data from previous works, the mapping of the depth to the water table, aquifer confinement degree, unsaturated zone lithology, rainfall recharge, lithological aquifer material, soil type, slope, hydraulic conductivity and land use and occupation. The information crossing in GIS system was done through the map algebra. In general, the vulnerability zoning from the GOD method revealed greater restriction regarding land use and occupation compared to the DRASTIC and IS methods, since predominantly high vulnerability sectors were identified. Considering the areas of land use and occupation, a predominantly low and intermediate vulnerability index was identified for the urban zone through the GOD and DRASTIC methods and an intermediate index through the IS method. In the areas of agricultural development and in the area of lagoons and dunes with little human intervention, low and intermediate vulnerability indices were determined using the DRASTIC and IS methods, while the GOD method has a high vulnerability predominance. Given the mapping of areas more sensitive to aquifer contamination, it is recommended to adopt more effective environmental control measures, as well as the elaboration of more detailed cartographic bases and the acquisition of more detailed data on land use and occupation and sources of contamination.
