ABSTRACT A complex stratigraphic portion of the Guarani Aquifer System was investigated following an integrated methodological approach. Two aquifers were identified, named the Passo das Tropas (main aquifer) and the Caturrita aquifers, corresponding respectively to the Passo das Tropas Member of the Santa Maria Formation and to the sandy facies of the Caturrita Formation. Two aquicludes, the Alemoa Member of the Santa Maria Formation and the mudstones facies of the Caturrita Formation, confine the aquifers. The first between Passo das Tropas and Caturrita aquifers and the second above the Caturrita aquifer. The alluvial facies of the Sanga do Cabral Formation corresponds to an aquitard, as indicated by outcrop analysis. The general ground water flow direction in the Passo das Tropas Aquifer is about the same of the paleocurrent directions. This aquifer is segmented into blocks by a NW fault system that caused vertical displacements which exceed the aquifer thickness. Comparative piezometric analysis demonstrates the importance of the stratigraphic and structural heterogeneities to the appropriated hydrogeological evaluation of the area. The role played by the faults in the direct recharge of the main aquifer, although not definitively established, is suggested by the wells hydraulic in the SE portion of the study area.
