Influence of the proximity of a landfill on water quality

Abstract

Several factors contribute to the contamination of both surface and groundwater located near a landfill. This is probably related to the formation of compounds resulting from the decomposition of organic matter from the material disposed in the landfill. As a result, the quality of these waters is altered and can no longer be used for various purposes by the population. The study was conducted in river and well waters located near a landfill located in a municipality of the metropolitan area of Fortaleza, capital of the State of Ceará. Three river water samples and one underground water sample were collected for three months for analysis of the water quality indicator parameters set by Resolution 357, of March 17, 2005 and Resolution 396, of April 07, 2008, from the National Environmental Council (Conama). The analyses followed the methodologies described in the Standard Methods for the examination of water and wastewater (APHA, 2012) and were performed in the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, Industrial Technology Foundation of Ceará (Nutec). According to the results, the concentrations of some parameters exceed the maximum values established by the aforementioned legislation, indicating a risk to the health of the local population.
