Abstract

In this work we investigated the applicability and effectiveness of phytoscreening method in research and determination of contamination plumes in a impacted area by chlorinated hydrocarbons in a tropical environment. Samples of 106 trees were analyzed in a contaminated area in the municipality of Porto Feliz, SP, Brazil. In the laboratory, the tree cores were analyzed using a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer and headspace sampler (HS-GC-MS). From these data were produced maps of the contamination plume and found spatial distribution of different organic contaminants - chloroform, trans-1,2-dichloroethene; cis-1,2-dichloroethene; carbon tetrachloride; 1,2-dichloroethane; trichloroethene; tetrachloroethene; 1,1,2-trichloroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane.The application of phytoscreening proved to be a fast and cost-effective for the detection of areas contaminated by organochlorines in tropical environment. The results show its applicability and effectiveness in primary research areas impacted by this type of contaminant.
